EVE BROKE HER SILENCE 이브, 침묵을 깨뜨리다 By Basil Fernando 바실 페르난도 The other day Eve spoke- 태초에 말씀의 자유를 누렸던 First time ever. 이브는 Her mouth had been shut 언젠가 입이 닫힌 뒤 그 오랜 세월을 In deep silence 깊은 침묵에 잠겼다 All these long years. It was all a lie. 그건 새빨간 거짓말이야 She said that story about the apple 이브가 말문을 열었다 And the serpent- 사과니 뱀이니 A concocted accusation-against me-the woman. 나를, 여자를 엮어넣으려는 수작이야 I said the earth 이제 당당히 말한다 Must be shared by all, 이 땅은 우리 모두의 것이어야 해 And then 그런데도 그들은 They just conspired 음모를 꾸미고 있어 To have the garden 정원을 온통 All to themselves 독차지하려는... And give barren lands 내게는, 내 딸들에게는 To me and descendants. 불모의 땅만 남겨둔 채... "Who are they?" a sister asked. "그들이 누구야?"한 자매가 물었다 The rich men, the affluent ones, 남자들, 풍요로운 남자들과 And their priests. 그들의 사제들 There were tears in her eyes- 이브의 눈에 눈물이 맺힌다 All these years, 그토록 긴긴 세월동안 All this neglect, 이 모든 치욕과 All this cruelty. 이 모든 잔혹함 Dear sisters, reinstate my name, 자매여, 나의 이름을 Restore my honour. 나의 명예를 되돌려라 Let the world know 가장 큰 죄악을 The great wrong. 세상에 알려라 Honouring the virgins 성처녀를 숭배하는 것은 Was just a trick 나를 옭아매려는 To blame me. 수작에 불과한 것 Crowds of destitute women 수많은 빈민자매들이 Pushed to prostitution- 매음굴에 떠밀려 들어가도 The priests did not care 사제들은 아무런 상관않아 As they did little care for slaves, 노예들에게 그랬던 것처럼 Our brothers. 우리의 형제들은 Vulgar women, they said to all of us, '천한 여자들이란'이렇게 말하지 All of us women. 우리에게 우리 모든 여자에게 Let the story of great robbery be told. 강탈의 역사를 이야기하자 To confront the lie lets us be bold. 거짓에 맞서 분노하자 The beauty of the women lies in their will. 여자의 진짜 아름다움은 여자의 의지 Let us show 그것을 보여주자 Ornaments of silver and gold- 금과 은의 장식은 Signs of our bondage; let us vomit out. 속박의 증거다 게워내 버려야 한다 Let the loud chorus of my daughters rise, 내 딸들의 커다란 함성을 일깨워라 Eve said. 고 이브는 말했다 And then Eve smiled. 이브가 웃었다 On earth, a great light arose, 이 땅위에 커다란 빛이 떠올랐다 Empires fell 제국은 몰락하고 And human beings regained again 인류는 Their stolen humanity. 잃어버린 인간성을 되찾았다 바실 페르난도씨는 스리랑카 출신의 시인이며 인권운동가. 현재 홍콩에 있는 아시아인권위 원회(AHRC) 의장이다. 지난 98년 5월 광주에서 열렸던 아시아 인권헌장 선포식 때 광주지 역의 인권단체들과 함께 중요한 역할을 담당했다.
